Knights pick up first win, settle for split

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Carleton College baseball team split two games on Friday. The Knights earned their first victory of the season by defeating Carroll University, 9-4, then a late Carleton comeback came up short in the nightcap as the squad fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps by a 9-8 score. David Stillerman (Sr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston) had five hits on the day while Cody Bohlman (So./Irvine, Calif./University) notched four safeties.

Jeff Dsida (Sr./Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) led off the first inning with a triple to left-center field before Stillerman scored him on a sacrifice fly. After Carroll plated two runs in the top of the second, the Knights scored five times on three hits during the fifth inning, including Ray Yong’s (Sr./Elmhurst, Ill./York) bases-clearing double. Hayden Tsutsui (So./Northridge, Calif./Chatsworth) also drove in a run during the frame with an RBI single, one of three times he reached base in the contest.

The Knights offense continued its strong performance as it added a run in each of the remaining three innings on RBI hits by Dsida and Yong and Stillerman’s second sacrifice fly of the game. Willie Freimuth (Fy./Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) was on base all four times, scoring three runs and notching a three-hit day, including a sixth-inning double.

Carleton starting pitcher Nolan Baker (Jr./Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) set the tone by striking out the game’s first batter and controlling the Pioneers lineup over his 8.0 innings of work. He fanned seven while issuing a lone walk. He yielded only the two runs and from the third to seventh innings, only one Carroll baserunner even reached second base against Baker.

Against C-M-S, the Knights once again scored first. Stillerman opened his four-hit contest with a single and raced around for a short-lived 1-0 lead. The Stags responded by scoring eight runs on seven hits in the bottom of the inning.

The Knights’ bullpen was outstanding and kept C-M-S in check long enough for Carleton to mount a rally. Jackson Tears (Sr./Trabuco Canyon, Calif./JSerra), Sam Cattau (Jr./Park Ridge, Ill./Walther Lutheran), Andy May (Jr./Edina, Minn./Edina), and Bohlman limited the Stags to just one hit and one run across seven innings of work. The relievers struck out seven hitters while allowing just two walks.

The Knights began to chip away in the fourth inning as Bohlman singled and scored on a fielding error. He had three of the Knights’ 16 hits and delivered a RBI single as Carleton scored twice in the top of the eighth. Baker had the other run-scoring hit in the frame.

In the ninth, the Knights pieced together five hits to bring the contest within a run. Hikaru Mizuno (So./Tigard, Ore./Tigard) drove in two runs with a double down the left field line. Yong tripled home another run and came home on Cameron Webb’s (Sr./Portland, Ore./Lincoln) RBI ground out. Matt Schwimmer (So./New York, N.Y./Fieldston) singled the tying run to third base with two outs, but the Knights were unable to bring the run home.

Carleton will face Carroll University once again on Saturday, March 22. First pitch is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. MST (11:00 a.m. CDT).
