MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Brendon Fischel (So./Eureka, Calif./Eureka) paced the Carleton College baseball team with three hits on the day, but the Knights dropped both ends of a Tuesday twilight twinbill at Augsburg College, 7-0 and 18-8 (8 inn.)

Fischel had two of the Knights’ four hits in the contest, but Augsburg (17-19, 5-11 MIAC) was able to scratch out runs in five of its six trips to the plate to slowly pull away from Carleton (9-23, 2-14 MIAC).

The Carleton bats awoke in game two as every member of the Knights starting lineup had at least one hit. Trailing 8-2 in the fourth, Carleton put together a six-run frame to match its largest single-inning scoring outburst of the season.

After two runs had already scored in the big inning, Willie Freimuth (Sr./Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) delivered a two-out RBI triple that was followed by a run-scoring double off the bat of Wilson Battle (Fy./Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline Senior). Two more runs raced home on Austin Heuer’s (So./Elk River, Minn./Elk River) double to right field as the Knights knotted the score at 8-8.

Ever since Carleton’s top pitcher Alec Lawler (Jr./Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Shanghai American School) went down with a season-ending injury back in March, the depth of the Knights’ pitching staff has been severely tested. Unfortunately, the Carleton hurlers finally broke under the strain as Augsburg scored 10 unanswered runs and finished the contest with season-bests in both hits (20) and runs scored (18).

Battle and fellow rookie Patrick Jorling (Fy./Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) had multi-hit performances to lead the Knights.

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Carleton hosts cross-town rival St. Olaf College for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader at Mel Taube Field on Wednesday, May 3. Knights Online will provide live video and live stats coverage.
