WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Carleton College baseball team had plenty of opportunities for big innings but could not collect enough clutch hits and absorbed an 11-3 loss to University of Chicago.

Carleton (4-4) entered the day hitting an impressive .386 with runners in scoring position, but the Knights went just 3-for-14 in those situations during this contest and left 13 baserunners stranded over the front seven innings, including 10 in scoring position.

The Maroons (5-2) scratched out a run in the second inning and added four more in the fourth. Jack Atterberry (Sr./Chatham, Ill./Glenwood) delivered Carleton’s first tally of the day with a RBI double in the top of the fifth, and an inning later Josh Small (Fy./Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) singled home one run and Ben Frerichs (Jr./Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens and St. Agnes) chased home another with a sacrifice fly.

Chicago opened up some breathing room with another four-run frame in the bottom of the eighth, and the Knights went down in order during the ninth.

Five different players had hits for Carleton, including doubles by Atterberry and Frerichs.

First-year Wilson Battle (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline Senior) took the loss despite allowing only one run over 3.0 innings of mound work.

Carleton next plays Thomas College on Wednesday, March 22 at 11 a.m. EDT.
