NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College baseball team held its home opener at Mel Taube Field on Saturday afternoon, but Macalester College put a damper on the festivities by sweeping the doubleheader, 3-2 and 7-0.

The Knights out-hit the Scots, 7-4, for the game but left eight runners on base, including six in scoring position in the one-run loss.

Macalester plated a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first, before a double by Blake Anderson (Fy./Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) led to Carleton’s first run in the second inning. The Scots added another tally in the third inning but would not get a runner past first base over the final four frames against Knights pitcher Austin Heuer (Jr./Elk River, Minn./Elk River).

Matt Rubin’s (Jr./Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) second double of the game plated Josh Small (So./Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) with one out in the bottom of the seventh. After a walk put the potential winning run aboard, the game ended with an automatic double play due to baserunner interference.

Heuer took the hard-luck loss, yielding only one earned run over his 7.0 innings of work as he dropped to 1-4 on the year.

The Knights were limited to two hits, singles by Anderson and Zane Johann (So./Berkeley, Calif./College Preparatory School), in the loss.

Carleton starting pitcher Tyler Rolland (Sr./Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) worked the first 5.0 innings and surrendered three runs, with each of those coming with two out.

Carleton’s home stand continues with a Sunday, April 29 doubleheader against University of St. Thomas. Live video/stats for the 1 p.m. twin bill can be found on Knights Online.
