NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Unable to push runs across early in each game, the Carleton College baseball team was swept by visiting Saint John’s University, 8-2 and 4-1. The Knights were able to slow down the top hitting team in the nation for large portions of the afternoon but struggled to push runs across themselves.

Both starting pitchers went the distance in a fast-paced contest that lasted less than 90 minutes. Saint John’s pitcher Danny Kuhn gathered his sixth win on the season, while Carleton senior Tyler Rolland (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) was saddled with the loss, bringing his season record to 3-5.

The Johnnies entered the day batting .371 as a team, tops across all NCAA Divisions (I, II, and III). They jumped out to an early lead and built a 6-0 advantage by the top of the third inning. Rolland eventually settled in and retired 15 of the last 19 batters he faced.

Carleton’s bats awoke in the bottom of the seventh inning as five hits led to a pair of runs. Wilson Battle (So./Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline Senior) led off the inning with a single and later scored on a RBI single by Chris Lasch (So./South Newfane, Vt./Northfield Mount Herman). Josh Small (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) singled home Lasch to account for the other Carleton run.

This was another very quick game, one which started eerily similar to the first. For the second time on the day the Johnnies scored three runs in the top of the first inning.

Johnnies starting pitcher Jake Dickmeyer carried a perfect game into the bottom of the fifth inning before Brendon Fischel (Jr./Eureka, Calif./Eureka) broke up the no-no with a clean single to left-center field.

The Knights struck back in the sixth inning on back-to-back doubles by seniors Ben Frerichs (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens and St. Agnes) and Logan Crowl (Sr./Chicago, Ill./University of Chicago Lab School) to bring the game to its final score of 4-1.

After allowing the three first-inning runs, Carleton righthander Dan Clipper (Fy./Millburn, N.J./Millburn) settled down and yielded only one more run over his final five innings of work in his first career start.

Carleton plays its fifth doubleheader in six days when the Knights host Martin Luther College for a 3:00 p.m. start on Thursday, May 3. Knights Online will feature live video/stats for both games.
