TUCSON, Ariz. – The Carleton College baseball team opened the 2019 campaign with a 6-3 defeat in a non-conference contest against MIAC foe Hamline University. Wilson Battle (Jr./Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline Senior) provided the biggest highlight for the Knights, belting a two-run home run, his fifth career roundtripper.

While Carleton (0-1) was making its season debut, this marked the 11th game of the season for the Pipers (5-6). The Knights fell behind 2-0 in the first inning but rallied for a run in the second and two more on Battle’s dinger in the third.

Hamline tied the game when Hartwig was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning, forcing home a run. The Pipers scratched out a trio of two-out runs in the eighth frame to pull out the victory.

Senior Matt Rubin (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) paced the Knights with two hits.

Austin Heuer (Sr./Elk River, Minn./Elk River) ended up with a no decision despite yielding only two earned runs over 7.0 strong innings of mound work. He fanned five and walked just one batter.

Carleton will play a doubleheader against UW-Superior on Friday, March 22.
