ST. PAUL, Minn. – The four seniors on the Carleton College baseball roster—Jack Atterberry (Chatham, Ill./Glenwood), Luke Curtis (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West), Willie Freimuth (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee), and Sean Kelly (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson)—wrapped up their collegiate careers as the Knights visited CHS Field for a doubleheader against Hamline University.

All four veterans saw playing time in at least one of the games. Atterberry went 1-for-3 with a walk and a RBI. Freimuth reached base five times on the day thanks to a single, three walks, and a hit by pitch. Both Kelly and Curtis spent time on the mound in game one and had the opportunity to swing the bat in game two. The Pipers put a damper on the festivities, however, by notching victories by scores of 13-1 and 8-3.

GAME 1

Hamline took advantage of eight walks to jump out to a big lead. Freimuth continued his late-season surge and extended his modest hitting streak to six games with a single in the fourth inning. He scored Carleton’s lone run in the sixth when he was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a double by Josh Small (Fy./Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley), and scored via Brendon Fischel’s (So./Eureka, Calif./Eureka) single to left field.

GAME 2

The Pipers built a 4-0 lead in the nightcap, but the Knights closed to within a run during the top of the sixth inning thanks to consecutive RBI hits from Patrick Jorling (Fy./Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson), Atterberry, and Austin Heuer (So./Elk River, Minn./Elk River). Unfortunately, the Carleton bullpen ran into trouble in the bottom of the frame and Hamline was able to secure the win.

SENIOR MOMENTS:

• Atterberry was a career .279 hitter with a .336 on-base percentage during his time at Carleton, appearing in 118 games, including 106 starts. He saw time at all four infield spots.

• Curtis split his time between pitcher, first base, and the outfield. He was in the lineup 81 times during his career, including 58 starts. The southpaw also appeared 37 times on the mound, with eight of those being starting assignments.

• Freimuth started 142 of his 143 career games, batting .290 with a .418 on-base percentage. His versatility was showcased when played all nine defensive positions in a game against St. Olaf on May 3.

• Kelly made 36 mound appearances as a Knight, including 14 starts. His best outing of the season was a 7.0-inning, 1-run effort at regular-season champion St. Thomas on April 22.
