ST. PETER, Minn. – The Carleton College baseball team had a forgettable afternoon at Gustavus Adolphus College, as the Gusties handed the Knights losses by scores of 13-5 and 12-3. The wind—blowing around 25 mph throughout the afternoon with gusts about 10 mph faster—made for challenging playing conditions, and eight fielding errors haunted Carleton to the tune of 11 unearned runs on the day.
After Gustavus (10-9, 3-3 MIAC) plated a pair of unearned tallies in the first, the Knights responded with four runs in the third frame, including run-scoring hits by Kiyota Gomi (Sr./Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Ardsley) and Jeff Dsida (So./Winnetka, Ill./New Trier).
The Gusties got a run back in the bottom of the stanza, then tied the contest with another unearned run in the fourth. After Carleton (6-13, 1-5 MIAC) had two runners cut down between third and home during the top of the fifth inning, Gustavus moved in front to stay with three more runs in the home half of the frame. The hosts then put the contest out of reach with six unearned runs the following inning against the Carleton bullpen.
Typical of how the day went for the Knights, centerfielder Erik Fabry (Sr./Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) was a perfect 3-for-3 in the opener, yet did not score a run or have an RBI.
The nightcap, unfortunately, followed a similar script to game one.
Gustavus plated two unearned runs in the opening inning. The Knights moved in front with a three-run third, but immediately the Gusties re-gained the momentum with two runs in the bottom of the frame, tacked on two more in the fourth inning, and put the game away by scoring a half-dozen times in the fifth.
Patrick Philley (Sr./Gig Harbor, Wash./Charles Wright Academy) and Nolan Baker (Fy./Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) went a combined 5-for-6 from the bottom two spots in the Knights’ batting order.
Carleton returns home and will try to re-group as Hamline University comes to visit Mel Taube Field on Tuesday, April 10 for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader. Live audio of both games will be available on Knights Online.
