MOORHEAD, Minn. – Behind the arm and bat of Kevin Johnson (Jr./St. Anthony, Minn./DeLaSalle), the Carleton College baseball team salvaged a split at Concordia College. After the Cobbers ran away with game one, 14-1, the Knights answered with an 8-4 victory in the nightcap, a contest in which Johnson went the distance for the victory and contributed a 4-for-4, 3 RBI performance at the plate.
The opener was a forgettable experience for Carleton as the Knights were limited to only three hits. Meanwhile, the Cobbers collected their 14 runs on 16 hits, five walks, and a hit batter.
The visitors briefly grabbed the lead in the second inning when Johnson singled with one out, stole second, and raced home on Cody Bohlman’s (Fy./Irvine, Calif./University High School) base hit to right field. Concordia responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame, another in the fourth and an eight-run fifth inning that put the game out of reach.
Johnson’s RBI single in the first inning of game two gave Carleton another short-lived lead. After the Cobbers answered with an unearned tally in the bottom of the inning, Johnson settled in and limited Concordia to only a lone single over the next four innings of mound work.
The Knights tacked on two runs in the third and two more in the fifth. Johnson and Bohlman delivered consecutive two-out, run-scoring doubles in the sixth as Carleton stretched the lead to 8-1. Concordia got three of the runs back in the bottom of the stanza, but Johnson re-gained control of the contest and secured the victory. He struck out five and walked a pair during his 7.0 innings on the hill, yielding four runs on seven hits.
Hayden Tsutsui (Fy./Northridge, Calif./Chatsworth) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored in game two, while Bohlman and Ray Yong (Jr./Elmhurst, Ill./York) both contributed 2 RBI games.
The Knights’ road trip continues with a visit to Macalester College on Sunday, May 5. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
