UW-La Crosse pulls away from Knights

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Hayden Tsutsui (So./Northridge, Calif./Chatsworth) had two hits, scored one run, and drove home another RBI, but the Carleton College baseball team dropped a non-conference contest at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse by a 13-5 margin.

Tonight marked the fifth straight day of competition for the Knights, who have now played 15 games over the last 12 days.

The Knights (18-11) scored three runs in the top of the first inning on run-scoring hits by Tsutsui and Willie Freimuth (Fy./Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) as well as a RBI groundout off the bat of Ray Yong (Sr./Elmhurst, Ill./York).

The Eagles (15-13) got two runs back in the bottom of the frame and tied the contest at 3-3 with another tally in the third inning.

Nolan Baker (Jr./Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) singled and scored on Jeff Dsida’s (Sr./Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) sacrifice fly in the fifth, and the Knights extended their lead to 5-3 when Tsutsui trotted home on Kevin Johnson’s (Sr./St. Anthony, Minn./DeLaSalle) run-scoring groundout.

UW-La Crosse entered the game averaging 9.7 runs per contest, including nearly 15 runs per game over their last three contests. The Eagle bats came alive during the middle innings, scoring three runs in both the fifth and sixth frames before pushing across four more tallies in the bottom of the seventh.

Carleton was limited to seven hits in the game, tied for the Knights’ third-lowest total of the season.

The team will enjoy some time away from competition before hosting conference leader and national No. 10 University of St. Thomas on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
