TUCSON, Ariz. – The Carleton College baseball team notched its first victory of the season with a 15-7 triumph in game one of Monday’s doubleheader with Oberlin College. The Knights held an early lead in the game two but were forced to settle for a split.

Trailing 6-2 after the opening frame, the Knights (1-5) scored 13 unanswered runs to pull away.

Josh Small (Jr./Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) paced the 19-hit attack with his 5-for-5 day at the dish. Wilson Battle (Jr./Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline Senior) and Brendon Fischel (Sr./Eureka, Calif./Eureka) went a combined 6-for-8 with four extra-base hits, five runs scored, and seven RBI. Matt Rubin (Sr./Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) was 2-for-2 with two walks and three RBI.

Cayten Gardner (Fy./Claremont, Calif./Claremont) was masterful out of the bullpen, yielding only one hit over his first 6.0 frames. All told, he yielded three hits over 6.2 innings of one-run ball with seven strikeouts.

Game two started well for the Knights when Fischel belted his second home run in as many days, cranking a two-run shot in the top of the first. After watching Oberlin grab a 5-2 lead, Jacob Small (Fy./Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) delivered a two-run, two-out double to make it a one-run game. The Yeomen responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to round out the scoring.

Fischel and Vince Cone (Fy./New York, N.Y./Trinity School) were the lone Knights with multi-hit games as each went 2-for-3.

Zane Johann (Jr./Berkeley, Calif./College Preparatory School) took the loss as he made his second career start, permitting five runs on seven hits over 4.0 innings.

These same two teams will meet up for another doubleheader on Tuesday, March 26. First pitch from the Kino Sports Complex is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. MST/12:00 p.m. CDT.
