TUCSON, Ariz. – The Carleton College baseball team concluded its Spring Break trip to Arizona by splitting its games on Tuesday against Oberlin College. The Knights overcame a 6-1 deficit to win the opener by an 8-6 tally before watching the Yeomen rally late to capture the finale, 5-3.

“It was great to finally get in the field and get some games under our belt,” said Carleton head coach Aaron Rushing. “Especially as a young team, these games and practices are huge for our development. We made big strides on the field and are looking forward to competing closer to home on Sunday.”

GAME 1 RECAP
The Knights (2-6) found themselves facing a five-run deficit, but they cut into the Oberlin lead with a four-run rally in the fourth inning. Blake Anderson (So./Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) delivered a RBI double down the right-field line, Paul Hinton (Fy./Omaha, Neb./Millard Prep) contributed a two-run single up the middle, and Zane Johann (Jr./Berkeley, Calif./College Preparatory School) plated the other run with a RBI groundout.

Carleton completed the comeback with three more runs in the home half of the sixth inning. Hinton tied the game with another RBI single, and Josh Small (Jr./Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) gave the Knights their first lead when he dropped a run-scoring single into left centerfield. Wilson Battle (Jr./Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline Senior) tacked on an insurance run with his base hit to left field.

After surrendering the six early runs, Austin Heuer (Sr./Elk River, Minn./Elk River) settled in and worked two additional scoreless frames. That allowed him to notch his first victory of the season, and Peter Hoffman (Fy./West Harrison, N.Y./Iona Prep) worked around a two-out double to pitch a scoreless top of the seventh and register his first collegiate save.

Hinton finished 2-for-3 with three RBI. Battle, Jacob Small (Fy./Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley), and Matt Rubin (Sr./Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) each had multi-hit performances.

GAME 2 RECAP
Carleton trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth before tying things up on a RBI single by Josh Small and a sacrifice fly off the bat of his brother Jacob.

It remained a 3-3 game until the seventh, when back-to-back two-out errors proved costly as Oberlin pushed across two costly runs. Carleton got the tying baserunners aboard in the bottom of the stanza but was unable to locate the clutch hit and finished the trip to the Grand Canyon State with a 2-6 ledger.

Anderson (0-2) absorbed the loss, yielding one earned run over his 3.0 innings of relief work.

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS
Carleton returns home and will face Minnesota-Morris for a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday, March 31. Those games are scheduled to be played on Reynolds Field at University of Northwestern-St. Paul.
