TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Carleton College baseball team tallied eight runs on a dozen hits but failed to start their spring break trip with a victory, falling by a final score of 13-8 to Grand View University. Cody Bohlman (Fy./Irvine, Calif./University) led the Carleton attack, going 3-for-5 with 3 RBI and a run scored.
The contest was not originally on the Knights' slate of games this week, but Carleton had a pair of contests in Iowa canceled over the weekend and head coach Aaron Rushing wanted to get his squad as much playing time as possible. Carleton also added a contest vs. Middlebury College on March 27.
Grand View jumped ahead early, scoring four runs on seven hits across the first two frames. However, the Knights responded quickly, tallying seven runs in the top of the third inning. A bases-loaded fielder’s choice pushed across the first run, and Carleton added another on a single to center field by Nolan Baker (So./Appleton, Wis./Appleton North). Following two walks and a hit-by-pitch, Bohlman stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and the score knotted at four runs apiece. He launched a triple to the right-centerfield gap, plating all three Knights.
Despite recording seven more hits throughout the duration of the contest, Carleton was only able to muster one more run. Hayden Tsutsui (Fy./Northridge, Calif./Chatsworth) led off the top of the fifth with a single through the left side, advanced to second on a balk, stole third, and scored on a pick-off play to first base.
The Vikings’ offense came alive again in the seventh inning, scoring five runs to take a 10-8 lead. They added another three in the eighth, which effectively sealed the game.
The Knights return to the field at the Kino Sports Complex on Wednesday, March 20, to face No. 18 University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. First pitch is slated for 11:00 a.m. MST (1:00 p.m. CDT).
