Knights Surrender Late Lead for Second Day in a Row

The Carleton College baseball team relinquished another late lead, dropping its fifth consecutive decision by a score of 5-4 to Wesleyan University. Hayden Tsutsui (Fy./Northridge, Calif/Chatsworth) drove in all four of the Knights’ runs, finishing the day 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

The game began as a pitching duel with starters Thaddaeus Gregory (So./Seattle, Wash./University Prep) and Jimmy Hill trading scoreless innings. Jukie Tsai (Jr./New York, N.Y./Friends Seminary) entered the game in the bottom of the fourth and continued the pitching dominance by adding two more scoreless frames to the board.

The Knights, however, were able to get to Hill in the fourth. Nolan Baker (So./Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) started the rally with one of his team-high three hits. Tsutsui then doubled down the left-field line, scoring Baker all the way from first.

The Cardinals responded a few innings later, using three singles to push across their first run of the game and tie the score at one.

This tie was short-lived, as Tsutsui struck again in the next frame. With two outs and the bases loaded, he laced a double to right field to clear the bases and put Carleton ahead, 4-1.

The bottom of the eighth inning proved fatal for the Knights the second day in a row. After getting two quick outs, a combination of two Wesleyan hits and two Carleton errors allowed the Cardinals to scratch across four runs to take the lead. The Knights were unable to answer in the ninth, and they suffered their fourth loss in as many days.

Carleton will have a chance for revenge tomorrow, as they face Wesleyan again at the Kino Sports Complex. First pitch is slated for noon MST (2:00 p.m. CDT).
