Knights Return to Action but Get Swept By Oles

By Alex Klein '15

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – After two-and-a-half weeks away from competition due to persistent wet weather, the Carleton College baseball team returned to Mel Taube Field on Friday to host crosstown rival St. Olaf College. Despite solid performances at the plate from David Stillerman (Jr./Evanston, Ill./ Evanston) and Hayden Tsutsui (Fy./Northridge, Calif./Chatsworth), who collected four hits and four RBI respectively, the Knights dropped both ends of a doubleheader, 9-5 and 7-1.

The Knights (10-10, 0-4 MIAC) came out the gates firing, putting up three quick runs in the first inning of game one with a string of singles and sacrifices. The Oles (14-7, 3-1 MIAC) answered with four runs of their own in the following frame. Carleton immediately tied the game, 4-4, with a Tsutsui RBI single in the bottom of the second.

From there the Knights’ bats quieted down some, producing only one more tally, a fourth-inning run, while St. Olaf touched pitcher Ted Harmon (Sr./Edina, Minn./Edina) for two runs in the third and two more in the fifth en route to the 9-5 victory

Junior Kevin Johnson (St. Anthony, Minn./DeLaSalle) took the mound for Carleton in game two hoping to turn the tide. Unfortunately, the Ole bats proved too strong as the visitors scored four runs in the first two innings. The Knights retaliated with back-to-back deep extra base hits from Stillerman and Tsutsui in the bottom of the third, but this alone was not enough. St. Olaf tallied on three more runs to take game two, 7-1.

Still winless in MIAC games, the Knights head on the road to Minneapolis to face Augsburg College on Saturday, April 27 at 1:00 p.m.
