No. 2 St. Thomas Too Deep for Knights

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Carleton College baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against national No. 2 University of St. Thomas. The games, decided by scores of 10-2 and 5-2, were shifted from Carleton to the Tommies’ home field due to wet weather.

Playing as the visiting team, the Tommies (26-4, 14-0 MIAC), winners of 18 straight overall, used a balanced offensive attack that saw every member of the starting lineup collect one hit and score a run.

The Knights (12-16, 2-10 MIAC) grabbed the initial lead when David Stillerman (Jr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston) was hit by a pitch in the opening frame and came around to score following base hits by Hayden Tsutsui (Fy./Northridge, Calif./Chatsworth) and Kevin Johnson (Jr./St. Anthony, Minn./DeLaSalle). St. Thomas responded with four tallies in the third inning against starting pitcher Ted Harmon (Sr./Edina, Minn./Edina).

Jeff Dsida (Jr./Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) singled and scored in the bottom of the frame, pulling Carleton within 4-2. Reliever Thaddaeus Gregory (So./Seattle, Wash./University Prep) was solved for three runs but avoided further damage by leaving the bases loaded in the fourth and fifth innings.

Carleton loaded the bases in the fifth, but reliever Mark Ulrich retired the final seven batters to finish out the victory.

Sam Cattau (So./Park Ridge, Ill./Walther Lutheran) got the starting nod in game two and started well, retiring eight of the first nine batters he faced. The second time through the lineup, though, the Tommies solved him for two runs in the third and two more in the fourth. Still the Knights had chances to leave town with a split, as they loaded the bases in the third and sixth innings. Both times Carleton got just a single tally.

Carleton will remain busy over the final week of the regular season with four doubleheaders on the schedule. The Knights are slated to travel to Moorhead, Minn. to face Concordia College on Saturday, May 4 followed by a Sunday twinbill at Macalester. Both doubleheaders are currently scheduled for 1 p.m. Carleton plays at Saint John’s and hosts Saint Mary’s on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
