NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Carleton College football team started its season off on a sour note with a 31-20 defeat at the hands of Macalester College. With their victory, the Scots have now posted back-to-back wins in the series for just the second time since the Book of Knowledge trophy was created.

Macalester (1-0) turned five Carleton (0-1) turnovers into 17 points and used a pair of 60-plus yard passing touchdowns in the third quarter to shift the momentum.

Carleton started off the game with their strongest drive of the afternoon, grinding their way down the field on a 13-play, 82-yard drive which culminated in a Christian Zaytoun (Jr./Raleigh, N.C./Woodberry Forest) five-yard touchdown pass to Dane Birkeland (Sr./Minneapolis,Minn./Minnehaha Academy). However, the first quarter ended in a 7-7 tie after Scots linebacker Phil Wettersten snagged a pass and returned it 12 yards for Macalester’s first score of the game.

The Knights went into halftime on a high note after a Spencer Francis (Jr./Hartland, Wis./Brookfield Academy) interception gave them the ball deep in Scot territory. Zaytoun finished off another drive through the air with a five-yard strike Emanual Williams (So./Lovelady, Texas/Lovelady) to take a 13-10 lead into intermission.

The third quarter belonged to the Scots. Christian Adams connected with Alec Beatty for a 64-yard strike to take the lead, and the duo followed it up with a 68-yard touchdown later in the period to give Macalester a 24-13 lead it would not relinquish.

The Knights attempted a fourth quarter rally. Williams had an 82-yard kickoff return that setup his second touchdown reception of the game, this one a 3-yard toss from Zaytoun. Unfortunately, the Scots recovered the ensuing onside kick and were able to run out the clock.

Zaytoun finished 20-for-33 for 148 yards and three touchdowns, as well as 37 yards on the ground. Williams led the skill position players with nine receptions. Kwaku Bodom (Jr./Brooklyn Park, Minn./Breck) finished with 12 total tackles, 3.5 of them for a loss, to lead the defense.

Adams finished 20-of-34 in the air for 341 yards and the two touchdowns passes.

Carleton hits the road to take on Lake Forest College in Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 1:00 p.m. Knights Online will feature live audio which can also be heard on KQCL 95.9 FM in the Northfield/Faribault area.
