NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Two members of the Carleton College football team are not quite ready to hang up the helmet and shoulder pads as seniors Paul Hoffer (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) and Mike Elder (San Antonio, Texas/Central Catholic) were selected to play in a pair of showcase games this weekend.
Elder—who was named the D3football.com All-Region Team earlier this week—is one of 90 players across the country ready to participate in the fourth annual D3 Senior Classic to be held on Friday, Dec. 7 in Salem, Virginia. Hosted by the Collegiate Development Football League, the D3 Senior Classic showcases some the top Division III football players from across the country divided into two teams (North vs. South).
Elder was tops among Division III defensive backs in both solo and total tackles and is one of four players from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) scheduled to attend. He is joined by Saint John’s University defensive back Bobby Fischer, St. Olaf College quarterback Dan Dobson, and St. Olaf defensive back Ben Dobson.
Hoffer—who grabbed national attention with his 99-yard interception return for a touchdown versus Macalester—will be the MIAC’s lone representative at the National Bowl Game to be played on Sunday, Dec. 9 in Allentown, Pa.
Hoffer paced the Knights in interceptions, pass breakups and blocked kicks this season and was third on the squad in tackles and tackles for loss. He is one of 88 players from across the nation slated to play in front of scouts from the Canadian Football League, Arena Football League, and the Professional Indoor Football League.
