ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- The Carleton College football team hit the road for a MIAC contest at Bethel University. The Knights kept the game close early, but the Royals were able to take advantage of Carleton’s three first-half turnovers as the hosts pulled away for a 49-0 result.

The Royals (2-4, 2-2 MIAC) took the ball 62 yards on eight plays to score a touchdown on the first drive of the game, giving Bethel an early 7-0 lead. The Knights (0-6, 0-4 MIAC) looked to respond immediately but a bid for the tying score resulted in a red zone interception. The rest of the first quarter was a defensive battle with the teams combining for only two more first downs.

The Royals got on the scoreboard again early in the second quarter, taking advantage of another interception. On Bethel’s next play, Jake Marsh connected with Bryce Marquardt for a 66-yard touchdown reception with 11:13 remaining in the quarter. The Royals were able to score three more times to extend their lead to 35-0 heading into halftime.

The second half proved to be a defensive struggle very similar to the first quarter, with the Carleton holding Bethel to a lone touchdown in each of the final two quarters.

The Knights were led defensively by Travis Brown (Fy./St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) and Jay Na (So./San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) with 14 tackles and 12 tackles, respectively. Carleton also recovered three fumbles.

The Knights are back in action next Saturday, Oct. 14 as they take on No. 10-ranked Saint John’s University. It will be Homecoming at Laird Stadium, and kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. Knights Online will provide live video and stats, and the game can also be heard on Power 96 (KQCL 95.9 FM) in the Northfield/Faribault area.
