NORTHFIELD, Minn. – With a heat index hovering in the mid 90s, the Carleton College football team was unable to match the quick strike ability of Augsburg University and ended up dropping its second MIAC contest of the year, 48-28.

Augsburg (3-1, 1-1 MIAC) had four scoring drives that lasted less than two minutes. The Auggies received the opening kickoff and drove down the field to score on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Quinn Frisell to Ray Guyton Jr. The Knights (0-4, 0-2 MIAC) answered on their ensuing drive with a 46-yard touchdown pass from Christian Zaytoun (Jr./Raleigh, N.C./Woodberry Forest) to Dylan Rye (Jr./Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow). The Auggies scored again on a 73-yard pass play late in the first quarter to take a 14-7 lead into the second quarter.

Tyler O’Keefe (Sr./Woodville, Wis./Spring Valley) tied the game up at 14-14 after his 1-yard plunge capped off an 11-play, 65-yard drive that lasted nearly six minutes. The Auggies scored twice more, on a kickoff return and a 14-yard pass, to bring the halftime score to 28-14 in their favor.

The second half started with three punts between the two teams before the Auggies reached the end zone halfway through the third quarter. The Knights responded immediately as Logan Emholtz (Jr./River Falls, Wis./River Falls) had a 46-yard reception that helped set up his 10-yard touchdown run.

Trailing 48-21 very early in the fourth quarter, Merrick Ducharme (Sr./Blooming Prairie, Minn./Hayfield) came up with a fumble recovery, and Zaytoun wasted no time getting Carleton back in the end zone. On the very next play, he lofted a 37-yard scoring toss to Dane Birkeland (Sr./Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) behind the Augsburg secondary.

The Knights were led offensively by Zaytoun, who threw for 226 yards and the two touchdowns. Defensively, Spencer Francis (Jr./Hartland, Wis./Brookfield Academy) led the way for the Knights with 12 tackles and an interception. Ducharme totaled 10 stops.

The Knights are back in action next Saturday, Sept. 30 when they visit Hamline University for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. Knights Online will feature live audio, which can also be heard on KQCL 95.9 FM in the Northfield/Faribault area.
