NORTHFIELD, Minn. – In the closing moments of a thriller between the two teams in the MIAC, No. 15-ranked Saint John’s squeaked past the Carleton College men’s basketball team, 69-68, when the Johnnies scored the game-winning basket with 10 seconds remaining. The contest featured 20 lead changes and was close throughout as neither team led by more than six points at any point.

"It was quite the battle at West Gym tonight between two quality teams," said Carleton head coach Guy Kalland. "In spite of the tough ending, I was very pleased with the consistent level of play our guys displayed on both ends of the court."

After a slow start, Carleton (7-5, 5-2 MIAC) faced its largest deficit of the evening at 12-6 barely five minutes into the contest. The Knights quickly found an offensive rhythm, however, and used a 12-2 run to grab their largest lead of the contest at 18-14 with 12:03 left before intermission.

The visiting Johnnies (11-1, 7-0 MIAC) got hot again, extending their lead back to five before a breakaway two-handed slam from Kent Hanson (So./St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) made it 29-26 with under five minutes remaining. On the following possession, Joh Farmer (Jr./Roseville, Minn.) cashed in on a traditional three-point play to knot things up at 29-29. From there, the two teams traded baskets until the scoreboard read 39-38 in favor of the Knights at the half.

Both teams shot at least 50 percent from the field during the first half of play. The second stanza featured more intense action as neither team led by more than five points.

With less than four minutes remaining, Johnnie center Tyler Weiss hit a floater to give his team a five-point advantage, 63-58. Carleton battled back as a tip-in by Hanson followed by his steal and layup made it a one-point game with 2:41 to go.

Weiss gave the visitors a three-point lead with his jumper at the 2:20 mark, but Kevin Grow (Sr./Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) scored four straight points to give Carleton the slight advantage, 66-65, a minute later. Weiss answered back, and Grow responded with two free throws, to put the Knights in front again 68-67 with 46 ticks remaining.

On the following possession, Hanson drew a timely charge with 24.6 seconds, returning the ball to the Knights. During the next inbound, a Johnnie appeared to tip the ball out of bounds, and the referees indicated Carleton ball. While the two teams talked in the huddle, however, the officials conferred and reversed their call, giving the ball back to Saint John’s.

The visitors made the most of their newfound luck, and Brent Hentges scored his only points of the contest on a layup with 10 seconds remaining. Carleton was unable to answer on the other end, and the Johnnies escaped with a 69-68 victory to remain unbeaten in conference play.

Grow led the way for the Knights with a game-best 23 points along with seven rebounds, four steals, and two blocks. Hanson added 15 points, eight boards, two steals, and two blocks. Johnson scored seven and dished out five assists.

Patrick Strom knocked down five three-pointers en route to 22 points to pace the Johnnies, while Weiss added 21 points.

The Knights return to action at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Hamline University. A live audio broadcast will be made available on KDHL 920AM and via Knights Online.
