COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Playing its fifth game in 10 days, the Carleton College men’s basketball team got off to a slow start at No. 6 Saint John’s University and never recovered in dropping a 78-57 decision. Kent Hanson (So./St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) totaled a game-high 25 points, but it was not enough against a Johnnies squad that shot a blistering 64 percent overall and 67 percent beyond the arc.

Saint John’s (20-2, 16-1 MIAC) never trailed in the contest, jumping out to an 11-2 lead. After a Hanson three-pointer pulled Carleton (12-10, 10-7 MIAC) within 18-16 with 12 minutes remaining in the first half, the Johnnies closed the period on a 25-6 run and carried a 43-22 lead into the break.

The teams played even on the scoreboard during the second half, but the Knights were unable to close the gap.

Hanson finished 10-of-15 from the field and 4-of-6 from long range. Quinn Johnson (Jr./Roseville, Minn./Roseville) matched his career best with 13 points.

Patrick Strom and David Stockman led the way for the Johnnies, tallying 17 and 16 points, respectively, as the duo went 9-of-12 from beyond the arc. All told, Saint John’s was 12-of-18 from long range.

With the victory, Saint John’s clinched at least a share of the MIAC regular-season title with three games remaining.

Carleton will look to regroup as the Knights celebrate Senior Day with a doubleheader against Concordia College. The men’s game begins at 1 p.m. with the women’s contest slated for a 3 p.m. start. Live video/stats of both games will be available via Knights Online.
