ST. PETER, Minn. – Despite four players in double figures and a valiant second-half rally, the Carleton College men’s basketball team ran out of gas and watched Gustavus Adolphus College pull away for a 74-54 decision. Tyler Goetz (Sr./Chaska, Minn./Chaska) achieved double-digit scoring for the fourth time this season, tallying 12 points as he went 4-of-8 beyond the arc.
Tom Sawatzke (Sr./Monticello, Minn./Monticello) scored all 13 points of his points and recorded four steals during the first half, but the Gusties (8-6, 5-4 MIAC) began the game on a 20-9 scoring run and lead the rest of the way. Making 21-of-32 of shots from the field (66 percent) during the first half, the Gusties were able to open up a 48-31 margin going into intermission.
Goetz hit back-to-back three pointers to begin the second-half comeback, and Carleton (8-6, 5-4 MIAC) managed to close within 59-50 with 8:22 to go. The rally may have taken too much out the Knights as they went just 1-of-9 from the field the rest of the way, allowing the hosts to pull away.
Scott Theisen (Sr./Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) contributed 12 points and nabbed six boards, while John Eckert (Fy./North Judson, Ind./North Judson) chipped in 11 points, five rebounds, two blocks, two assists, and a steal.
The Gusties were led by Jim Hill and Ben Biewen, who scored 19 and 15 points respectively.
Carleton will rest up during the squad’s bye on Wednesday, then travels to St. Paul, Minn. on Saturday, Jan. 19, to play against Hamline University for a 1 p.m./3 p.m. doubleheader. Both games can be heard on KDHL 920 AM and Knights Online.
