MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – In its first MIAC tilt of the season, the Carleton College men’s basketball team was overwhelmed by Augsburg University, 74-46, on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.

Carleton (1-3, 0-1 MIAC) came out of the gates a bit slow, scoring just two points in the first seven-plus minutes of play. Henry Bensen (Jr./Roseville, Minn.) accounted for the Knights’ second field goal at the 12:08 mark, making it a 19-4 game in favor of Augsburg (4-0, 1-0 MIAC).

The Auggies eventually built a 47-18 halftime lead and were paced by Kevin McKiernan’s 18 points, thanks largely to 5-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. The Augsburg guard also corralled a game-high 14 rebounds.

Carleton continued to struggle on the offensive end in the second half. First-year Joe Thursby (Park Ridge, Ill./Northridge Prep) came off the bench and drained three shots from distance late in the game, but the damage had already been done.

Carleton shot 33 percent from the field and was 9-of-20 at the charity stripe. The Auggies shot 41 percent and connected on 10-of-32 shots from three-point range.

Kent Hanson (Jr./St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) was the lone Knight in double figures, pouring in 11 points and adding seven rebounds. Thursby racked up nine points, and Zac Olmsted (Fy./Pulsbo, Wash./North Kitsap) finished with six.

Augsburg’s Booker Coplin entered the game leading MIAC players at over 30 points per game, but he was limited to 15 points.

Next up for the Knights is another road game, this one at Saint Mary’s University on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 3:00 p.m. Links to live video and stats will be available on Knights Online.
