ST. PAUL, Minn. – With the Knights clinging to a three-point lead six minutes into the second half, first-year Joe Thursby (Park Ridge, Ill./Northridge Prep) came off the bench and drained three consecutive 3-pointers to boost the Carleton College men’s basketball team to a 67-51 victory at conference rival Macalester College.

In the early going, both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm, but the scoring opened up midway through the frame. The Knights (4-8, 2-5 MIAC) rode a mini-run out to a 14-10 lead to force a Macalester (3-10, 0-8 MIAC) timeout with 8:46 left before intermission.

After some more back-and-forth play, Kent Hanson (Jr./St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) converted on an off-balance layup at the 3:52 mark, handing Carleton a 21-17 lead and jolting his team with some much-needed energy. From there, the Knights scored seven of the next nine points to earn a 28-19 advantage.

The Scots battled back a bit before the break, but Carleton led 28-23 at halftime.

The Knights were unable to shake Macalester in the opening stages of the second half, and the scoreboard read 33-30 in favor of Carleton as the clocked ticked toward the 14-minute mark. That’s when Thursby changed the complexion of the contest, as the rookie scored the game’s next nine points as he knocked down 3-points on three consecutive possessions. That spurt extended the Knights’ advantage to 42-30, forced a timeout from the home team, and gave Carleton a double-digit lead that it would not relinquish.

The Knights did not look back from there and pushed their lead to 20, effectively sealing the game with a significant amount of game left to play. Carleton went on to claim the victory by a 67-51 tally,

Hanson led Carleton with 19 points and 10 rebounds while going 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Matthew Stritzel (So./Chicago, Ill./Niles Notre Dame) finished with 15 points, four boards, and three steals. Thursby’s nine points matched his season high.

Wyatt Ferm and Gabriel Ramos each tallied 11 points to spearhead the Macalester attack.

The Knights will look to keep their momentum going on Wednesday, Jan. 9 when Carleton hosts Saint Mary’s University at 7:00 p.m. Links to live video and live stats will be available on Knights Online.
