NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Scott Theisen (Jr./Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) and Caleb Rosenow (Sr./Red Wing, Minn.) posted their second and fifth career double-doubles, respectively, but the Carleton College men’s basketball team still absorbed a 54-40 setback against Gustavus Adolphus College. Theisen scored 14 points and added a career-high 12 rebounds, while Rosenow contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The Gusties (12-5, 9-3 MIAC) shot 54 percent in the first half and 48 percent for the contest, compared to only 27 percent overall for Carleton (6-11, 3-9 MIAC).

Tom Sawatzke (Jr./Monticello, Minn.) added 10 points to the Knights’ total. Rookie Shane McSparron (Fy./Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) was held scoreless but contributed a team-best five assists. Equally important on this evening was his strong defensive effort as he limited the Gusties’ Seth Anderson—the conference’s leading scorer—to only a 6-for-16 shooting performance. Anderson finished with just 13 points, barely half his season average of 25.5 points per contest.

Gustavus, however, found enough offensive outside of its star and played solid defense of its own, holding Carleton to a season-low scoring output.

After the Knights scored the game’s first three points, the Gusties put together an 11-0 run and built a lead they would not relinquish. The Knights trailed 32-24 at the break and still faced an eight-point deficit with 13:45 remaining in the contest. Gustavus went a 14-3 spurt over the next seven minutes to put the game out of reach.

Carleton looks to bounce back on Saturday, Jan. 28 when the squad travels to Saint John’s University for a 3 p.m. tipoff. Live audio of that game will be available on KDHL 920 AM and Knights Online.
