NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- In a loaded field of ranked D-II and D-III teams, the Carleton College men’s cross country team raced to a fourth-place result at the St. Olaf Invitational.

No. 7 UW-Eau Claire (41 points), regionally-ranked Minnesota-Duluth (D-II) had 91 points, and No. 16 St. Olaf College tallied 102 points. The Knights, ranked No. 35 in Division III, totaled 126 points to place one spot ahead of No. 34 Willamette by four points. Another D-II program, Winona State claimed sixth place (160), and regionally-ranked Central College took seventh place (229).

The Knights were led by Donson Cook-Gallardo (Sr./Moscow, Idaho/Moscow), who finished second in the field of 278 runners with a time of  25:33.8 for the 8-kilometer course. Cook-Gallardo was bested only by Darin Lau of UW-Eau Claire, who could be considered the favorite to win the D-III NCAA Championships this year. Donson’s “smooth and confident” race resulted in him finishing 32 seconds ahead of the next-closest MIAC finisher.

Also placing in the top 15 for the Knights were first-years Lucas Mueller (St. Paul, Minn./Nova Classical Academy) and Matt Wilkinson (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka). Mueller was the second Carleton runner to cross the line, taking seventh place with a time of 26:18.5. He was the only first-year to finish in the top 10 of today’s race. Wilkinson was third for Carleton, finishing in 15th place overall with a time of 26:38.4.

"Matt Wilkinson's race was an outstanding tribute to former Minnetonka High School's long-time coach Steve Hoag,” said Carleton head coach Dave Ricks.

“Steve Hoag was an icon of Minnesota distance running, who passed away on Friday.  The Carleton men broke the team huddle with ‘1, 2, 3, Steve Hoag!’  I am sure that Steve was watching from above with a smile of pride watching Matt's race today."

Rounding out the top-five for the Knights were Hiroshi Nakajima (Sr./Minato, Japan/Tabor Academy) and Tris Dodge (Jr./ Oakland, Calif./The College Preparatory School), finishing in 37th and 72nd, respectively, with times of 27:27.8 and 28:10.9.

Carleton’s sixth and seventh finishers were Clay Tydings (Fy./Woodberry Forest, Va./Woodberry Forest) and Conrad Phelan (So./St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) with times of 29:27.1 and 29:29.4.

After a week away from competition, the Knights will host the annual Running of the Cows Meet on Saturday, Sept. 30 in the Carleton Arboretum. The men’s race begins at 10:00 a.m.
