Knights finish second at Lewis & Clark and St. Boni Invites

ESTACADA , Ore. – The regionally-ranked Carleton College men’s cross country team spent the beginning of mid-term break competing in a pair of meets on Saturday. The top racers on the squad were in Estacada, Ore. for the Lewis & Clark Invitational where the Knights finished in second place behind the No. 1-ranked NAIA program in the country. Another contingent of Carleton runners headed to the St. Bonifacious Invitational where the Knights took second place as well.

In Oregon, the Knights totaled 38 team points after placing all five scorers among the top 13 finishers. That was only eight points behind team champion Southern Oregon. The 11-team race also featured a trio of regionally-ranked D-III schools, who finished in the three spots behind Carleton. Meet host, Lewis & Clark is ranked No. 6 in D-III West Region and finished with a team score of 115 points, narrowly edging out the west region’s No. 4 ranked team, Pacific Lutheran, at 117 points. Rounding out the top-five at the meet was Whitworth University (No. 10 in D-III West Region) with a score of 139.

Leading the way for the Knights was Donson Cook-Gallardo (Sr./Moscow, Idaho/Moscow) as he finished in second out of 116 racers with a time of 24:59.1 for the 8K course. Next for Carleton was the first-year duo of Matt Wilkinson (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) and Lucas Mueller (St. Paul, Minn./Nova Classical Academy), who finished in seventh and eighth place, respectively, with times of 25:18.1 and 25:21.2. They were the top finishing rookies in the entire race, with the next first-year finishing over ten places behind Mueller in 21st overall.

Rounding out the top five for Carleton were Tris Dodge (Jr./Oakland, Calif./The College Preparatory School) and Cameron Meikle (So./Hamilton, Mont./Hamilton), as they finished in 12th and 13th with times of 25:40.0 and 25:45.7.

Carleton also had runners competing at the St. Bonifacius Invite. Martin Luther totaled 20 points, while the Knights placed five runners inside the top 11 and took second with a score 35.

Ben Schnieders (Fy./ Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central) led the way for the Knights with a fifth-place finish and a time of 29:24.

Next for the Knights, finishing in seventh, eighth, and ninth places, respectively, were Andrew Ruvkun (Sr./ New York, N.Y./Packer Collegiate Institute), Evan David (Fy./ Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) and Camden Sikes (Sr./ Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley)  with times of 29:33,29:57 and 30:06. Rounding out the scoring for Carleton was Max Kuhs (Fy./ Edina, Minn./Edina) who finished in 11th place with a time of 30:43.

Carleton competes next on Saturday, Oct. 28 at the 2017 MIAC Championships held this year at St. Olaf College.
