PELLA, IA- The Carleton College men’s cross country team placed seven runners among the top-17 finishers and took first place at the Dutch Invitational. The Knights bested host Central College, the No. 7 team in the nation, as well as a regionally-ranked squad from Loras College.

“An outstanding start to the season,” said Carleton head coach Dave Ricks. “This was our best race since the 2007 nationals-qualifying team graduated.

The Knights entered the meet ranked by the USTFCCCA as the No. 10 squad in the central region and finished with 36 points, four better than Central—the region’s top-ranked squad—and 14 in front of Loras, which entered the meet ranked fourth in the region.

Leading the Knights was Hart Hornor (So./Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) who finished second overall with a time of 26:30.3. Jonah Barry (So./Madison, Wis./Madison West) followed close behind in fourth place, while Jacob Hoerger (Sr./Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) and Marcus Huderle (Sr./Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) finished eighth and ninth respectively.

Joe Haase (So./Madison, Wis./Madison West) rounded out the scoring for Carleton as he edged teammate Thor Laack-Veeder (Jr./Madison, Wis./LaFollette) for 13th place. First-year Walter Edstrom (Plano, Texas/Plano West) had a solid collegiate debut with a 17th-place result in the 97-racer field.

The Knights will be back in action on Saturday, Sept 14 at the Les Duke Invitational hosted by Grinnell College.
