RIVER FALLS, Wis. – Behind a 1-2-3 finish for Donson Cook-Gallardo (Sr./Moscow, Idaho/Moscow), Lucas Mueller (Fy./St. Paul, Minn./Nova Classical Academy), and Matt Wilkinson (Fy./Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka), the Carleton College men’s cross country claimed the team title at Friday’s Falcon Invitational hosted by UW-River Falls.

The Knights put all five scorers in the top-14 and totaled 29 points to edge UW-Stout (35 points) for the top spot in the eight-team field.

Cook-Gallardo, Mueller, and Wilkinson took the lead early pulled away from the remainder of the field. Eventually the Carleton senior took over and cruised to a 22-second margin of victory, completing the 8000-meter distance in a course-record time of 25:36.40. Mueller posted a time of 25:58.20, and Wilkinson finished four seconds later. It was another 17 seconds until the fourth-place runner, Alex Ilyushev of UW-Stout,  reached the line.

Hiroshi Nakajima (Sr./Minato, Japan/Tabor Academy) and Keenan Ronayne (Jr./Faribault, Minn./Faribault) were instrumental in the team triumph. They worked together through the first half of the race, despite the fact that Ronayne had lost a shoe in the first mile of the race. The former placed ninth at 26:46.20, while the latter completed the Knights’ scoring with his “ne-shoed” PR of 27:23.20, which ranked 14th overall.

The Knights will get their first look at their cross-town rivals when Carleton competes at the St. Olaf Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 16.
