SARTELL, Minn. – The Carleton College men’s golf team finished 12th of 14 teams at the Saint John’s Fall Invitational, which serves as the final tune-up before the upcoming MIAC Championships.

The two-day event was held at Greystone Golf Club in Sauk Centre, Minn. and Blackberry Ridge Golf Course in Sartell, Minn. Carleton posted team scores of 321 and 323.

The Knights were led by senior captain David Perl (Glencoe, Ill./New Trier), who went 78–80 to finish in a tie for 39th. Avery Tribus (Sr./Madison, Wis./Edgewood) and Peter Gullickson (So./Minneapolis, Minn./Blake School) had matching days of 78 and 82 to finish the tournament in a tie for 50th.

As for the trio of 78’s carded in the opening round, assistant coach Perry Strong said, “Any score under 80 was great on a day where it was hard to feel your hands.”

The highlight of the second day was turned in by senior Aaron Sparby (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) who birdied the par-3 9th hole and then eagled the par-5 10th. He improved by 14 shots after his opening-round 94 to come back with an 80 on the second day. Senior Brendon Fischel (Eureka, Calif./Eureka) was also able to improve on his first day 87 with an 81 in the final round.

“We struggled at Blackberry Ridge,” noted Strong, “taking four scores in the low 80’s on what was a very scoreable day, albeit cold. The lone bright spot was Brendon Fischel, who shot an 81 in only his fourth competitive golf tournament ever. Despite that we are going to continue to work on our games and prepare for conference next week.”

Carleton plays at the 2018 MIAC Men’s Golf Championships from Oct. 6-8 at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan, Minn.
