JORDAN, Minn. – The Carleton College men’s golf team finished ninth at the 2018 MIAC Championships held at The Ridges at Sand Creek. The three-day event was shortened to two days, with 36 holes played on Sunday in order to avoid the rain forecasted for Monday’s final round. The Knights posted scores of 318, 311, and 311 over the three rounds.

“We averaged around 315 to 320 over the season, so finishing the last two tournament rounds at 311 was a great way to end the fall,” Carleton head coach Jerry Ericksen said.

No. 13-ranked University of St. Thomas won the conference tournament, followed by Gustavus Adolphus College and Augsburg University in a tie for second place. No. 17 Saint John’s University finished fourth.

Carleton was led by senior Sam Reategui (Highland Park, Ill./North Shore), who tied for 15th place overall. After matching his career best with a 75 in Saturday’s opening round, Reategui posted a career best one-over par 73 on the first 18 holes of the day, thanks to four birdies. He closed the tournament with a 77 to wrap up the weekend with a career-best 54-hole score of 225.

Following Reategui was senior Avery Tribus (Madison, Wis./Edgewood), who bettered his first round 81 with scores of 73 and 74 in the second and third rounds, respectively, as he totaled eight birdies on the day. He finished in a tie for 22nd with a 12-over par total of 228. Sunday’s 73 was the second-best score in Tribus’ career, and is 74 matched his third-best result.

“The course was set up this weekend to allow for a lot of birdies, while also forcing you to hit good shots throughout your entire round,” commented Reategui after the tournament. “We clearly didn’t play our best as a team this weekend, but it was nice to see the guys grind out respectable scores without their best game.”

Peter Gullickson (So./Minneapolis, Minn./Blake School) and David Perl (Sr./Glencoe, Ill./New Trier) finished third and fourth for the Knights. Gullickson posted scores of 81, 82, and 80 to total 243. Perl was two shots behind at 81, 83, and 81 for a three-round total of 245. Aaron Sparby (Sr./Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) improved his score each day going 88, 84, and 80.

“We battled some cold weather for the second week in a row, and its effect really showed for most of our scores,” said Perl. “Fortunately, Sam and Avery played some great golf today to anchor our team.”

The Knights head into the offseason on a positive note and are already looking forward to the spring season which begins in late March.
