Rusty Putter Slips from Carleton's Grasp

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- On Sunday afternoon the Carleton College men’s golf team faced off against cross-town rivals St. Olaf in the annual “Rusty Putter” match at the Northfield Golf Club. The dual meet consisted of four matches pairing two players from each team, each match involved three events: best-ball, alternate shot, and scramble formats.

Carleton gained possession of the rusty Scottish Putter for the first time last spring, but were unable to maintain custody of this “treasured” keepsake.

Despite a strong finish from the team of senior captain Turner Wadington (St. Charles, Ill./Elgin Academy) and junior Ted Harrington (Frisco, Texas/Justin Wakeland), who won two points in their match, the Knights fell to the Oles 7.5 to 4.5. Wadington and Harrington won the alternate shot contest and tied their opponents in both the best-ball and scramble categories.

Junior Evan Osborne (Phoenixville, Pa./Great Valley) and first-year Jorde Ranum (Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park) were also major contributors for the Knights, winning the best-ball format and forcing a tie in the scramble to split their match and earn 1.5 points. Junior Brian Chesley (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West) and sophomore Aaron Buckley (San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker School) suffered a pair of setbacks in the first two events, but rallied to win a point in the scramble format. While seniors Jake Reznick (New York, N.Y., Fieldston School) and David Steefel-Moore (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata), pitted against a tandem that included the current MIAC co-champion, kept pace in the best-ball competition until falling behind on the last hole.
