NORTHFIELD Minn. – Derek Funk’s (Sr./Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) second collegiate goal was his second game winner of the week. But this one came in much more dramatic fashion as the Carleton College men’s soccer team overcame a second-half deficit to defeat visiting Elmhurst College, 2-1, in overtime.
The first half seemed to favor the Knights (3-0-0), who outshot the Bluejays 7-1 over the first 40 minutes of play. Elmhurst (1-2-0) gained ground towards the end of the half, winning the possession battle and getting off two shots over the final four minutes.
It was Elmhurst who drew first blood in the second period after a pair of yellow cards issued to the Knights and a further foul led to an Elmhurst free kick just outside the Carleton goal box in the 59th minute. The Bluejays’ Brett Harper sent the kick in from the right side, where it was headed by Christopher Mullin into the left side of the net to give Elmhurst a 1-0 lead.
Carleton found its rhythm and responded 10 minutes later. Following a free kick, Neil Bartholomay (Jr./St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) collected a loose ball atop the box and took a shot. The ball bounced twice before ricocheting off the left post and into the net, tying the game.
The Knights took four shots over the final ten minutes of regular time but was unable to connect, so the fans at Bell Field held their breath and waited for overtime.
Carleton had all the momentum in overtime, taking three shots that failed to connect over the first nine minutes. Then with 48 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, Branden McGarrity (Fy./Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) chased down a long ball sent over the Bluejays’ defense. McGarrity then cut the ball back between two defenders putting ball out in front of the Elmhurst goal.
Funk, whose first collegiate goal accounted for the game winner against Cornell College in the season opener, blasted the feed underneath goalkeeper John Reglin and into the back of the net, winning the game for Carleton.
Carleton finished with an 18-6 advantage in shots, including a 4-0 margin in the extra period.
The Knights next travel to Mankato, Minn. to take on Bethany Lutheran College on Sept. 14 at 7:00 p.m.
