NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Both the Carleton College and North Central College men’s soccer teams got on the scoreboard in the second half, but neither team could tally another goal as the Knights and Cardinals played to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon.

William Lanzillo (So./Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) nearly gave the hosts the first-half lead when his shot from the left wing in the 32nd minute struck the right goal post.

The Knights kept knocking and finally broke through in the 61st minute. Peter Passalino (Sr./Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) had his shot from the left side blocked, and the ball deflected out to Stephen Baisch (Jr./Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy), who delivered a cross to the middle of the box. Riley Phelps (Sr./Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green) ran onto the pass and volleyed a shot into the left side of the goal for his third score of the young season.

North Central came up with the equalizer in the 80th minute after Ryan O’Deen’s corner kick bounced in the box and was headed home by Nate Donovan at the back post.

Carleton had two chances in the 82nd minute to re-gain the lead, but the Cardinals’ Sebastian Garcia stopped both the initial shot and a close rebound attempt sending the match to extra time.

In the first bonus period, rookie Andrew Younkins (Beaverton, Ore./Westview) nearly delivered the game winner in the 99th minute as his well-stuck strike from the top of the box clanged off the crossbar.

Carleton finished with a 19-10 edge in shots. Garcia registered eight total saves, while the Knights’ Brandon Hilliard (Jr./Anoka, Minn./Totino Grace) tallied five saves.

The Knights next travel to Simpson College for a 7 p.m. match on Wednesday, Sept. 7.
