MORRIS, Minn. -- Danny Leal (Jr./Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake) scored his MIAC-best fourth and fifth goals of the season—one in each half—to lead the Carleton College men’s soccer team to a 2-0 road triumph over University of Minnesota-Morris.
The first goal for the Knights (2-2) came in the 14th minute. Midfielder Sam Hayward (Sr./Stanford, Calif./Gunn) was tripped in the box, and Leal buried the penalty kick for his fourth goal in as many games.
The Cougars (0-4) had a handful of scoring chances in the opening period, but Brandon Hilliard (So./Anoka, Minn./Totino Grace) stopped all five shots on goal.
Carleton’s insurance goal came early in the second half as John Fox (Sr./Duluth, Minn./Marshall) played a ball beyond the Minnesota-Morris defense, setting up Leal one-on-one with Cougar goalkeeper Cody Christ. The junior forward converted this opportunity in the 52nd minute, and the Knights were not severely tested the remainder of the way.
The Carleton defense stiffened in the second half, holding Minnesota-Morris without a shot. The Knights, meanwhile, came close to doubling their goal total as both Hayward and John Fox (Sr./Duluth, Minn./Marshall) had shots deflect off the post during the contest.
Carleton returns home to host Grinnell College on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. Live video and stats for that contest will be available via Knights Online.
