Men's Soccer vs. Gustavus Adolphus College

Saturday, October 3rd, 2015 – 1:00 p.m. at Northfield, Minn. - Bell Field

Knights Overpower Gustavus, 3-0

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – A pair of goals by senior Branden McGarrity (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) and a tap-in finish by classmate John Fox (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) was more than enough offense for the Carleton College men’s soccer team as the Knights bested Gustavus Adolphus College, 3-0.

Carleton (5-4-2, 2-1-1 MIAC) had decided advantages in every offensive category. The Knights owned a 23-7 edge in shot attempts and a 10-3 margin in shots on goal. The hosts also took 7 of the 9 corner kicks in the match.

McGarrity, who returned to the lineup last week, appeared to catch the Gusties (5-3-1, 0-3-1 MIAC) napping in order to score his 37th career goal. In the 14th minute, he scooped up an errant pass, held of a defender, and calmly slotted a low left-footed shot inside the right post.

Fox’s goal came in the 39th minute following a free kick. A headed ball was grabbed by Gustsavus goalkeeper Anders Severson, but when he brought the ball down it deflected off Stephen Johnson (Sr./Edina, Minn./Edina) and fell inside the six-yard box. Fox was the first one to it and tapped home his fourth goal of the campaign.

The day’s most picturesque tally came off McGarrity’s right foot in the 56th minute. He ran down a long ball to the left corner, then worked back against a pair of defenders before striking a shot from the edge of the 18-yard box. The ball curled just inside the upper 90 on the right side of the goal, managing to avoid the crossbar and deflecting off the post and in. This was McGarrity’s eighth career multi-goal game.

Brandon Hilliard (So./Anoka, Minn./Totino Grace) stopped all three shots on goal for Carleton’s fifth shutout of the season.

The Knights will rest up before hosting Concordia College on Saturday, Oct. 10 as part of Carleton’s Homecoming Weekend. Live video and stats will be available via Knights Online.
