NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Carleton College men’s soccer team battled visiting Augsburg College to a scoreless draw during a physical match on Saturday afternoon. The Knights fell just short of their third consecutive victory but extended their unbeaten streak to four games thanks to late defensive heroics.

Augsburg (2-3-1, 1-0-1 in MIAC) came out physical, and Carleton (3-1-2, 1-1-2 in MIAC) answered back in what proved to be a heated affair. The squads combined for 33 fouls and five cautions.

William Lanzillo (So./Glenn Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) broke through the Auggies’ back line in the first minute, firing a shot towards goal that was caught by keeper Tommy Molski, who finished the day with six saves, including a diving stop on a penalty kick in the 62nd minute of play.

Although neither team found the net, both sides created numerous chances to break the deadlock. The hosts absorbed 12 shots from the Auggie attack, and produced 15 shots of their own.

Outside backs Stephen Baisch (Jr./Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) and Mark Roth (So./Evanston Ill./Evanston Township) both put in stellar shifts, playing all 110 minutes and methodically turning back Augsburg attackers on the wings.

Roth also earned a penalty kick for the Knights, combining in close quarters with forward Riley Phelps (Sr./Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green) before getting tripped up in the box.

With Carleton goalie Brandon Hilliard (Jr./Anoka, Minn./Totino Grace) well off his line early in a frantic second overtime period, Knights defender Kamran Kelly (Fy./St Paul, Minn./Central) came to the rescue as he leapt to head away what looked destined to be the game-winner for Augsburg. Then with less than a minute remaining, Hilliard put his body on the line to parry away a close-range effort for his sixth save, guaranteeing that Carleton would secure its first point in the MIAC team standings.

Carleton hits the road for a primetime matchup at Northwestern-St. Paul on Wednesday, Sept. 21.
