ST. PETER, Minn. – The Carleton College men’s soccer team out-shot Gustavus Adolphus College but lost for the first time this season as the Knights dropped a 2-0 result in the MIAC opener for both squads
The match was a physical one throughout, with neither side giving up much ground at the beginning. Will Richards opened the scoring for the Gusties (4-1-0, 1-0-0 MIAC) when he poked in a cross at the 18th minute.
Looking to continue their perfect start to the season, Carleton (3-1-0, 0-1-0 MIAC) came out swinging at the beginning of the second half, creating multiple great looks, and outshooting the Gusties 9-5 during the period. The Knights almost had their breakthrough in the 64th minute, however, a penalty kick from William Lanzillo (Sr./Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) smacked just off the left post and caromed away. Gustavus added its insurance goal with only 30 seconds remaining in the contest.
Carleton finished with a 13-10 edge in total shots, forcing Gustavus goalkeeper Anders Severson to make 10 stops.
Spencer Weeden (Jr./Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) led the Knights with four shots on the afternoon, including three shots on goal. Aaron Forman (So./Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) contributed three saves in net.
Up next, Carleton will host Hamline University at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15. That will be the second half of a women’s-men’s doubleheader, with the early game kicking things off at 1 p.m. Live video and live stats of both contests will be available via Knights Online.
