NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Simon Ginet (Jr./Arlington, Mass./Arlington) scored the first goal and assisted on the other as the Carleton College men’s soccer team notched its first conference victory of the campaign, dispatching of Concordia College by a 2-1 margin.

The Knights, ranked No. 23 in the latest NSCAA national poll, improve to 6-1 on the year and evened their MIAC ledger at 1-1. Carleton possessed a 21-4 edge in shots and took the only seven corner kicks of the afternoon.

Carleton’s first goal came in the 24th minute. Will Corcoran (Jr./Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi) brought the ball in from the left wing and passed across for Ginet, who collected the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and fired a shot inside the left post for his fifth goal of the campaign.

Concordia (4-4, 1-2 MIAC) tallied the equalizer in the 38th minute. The ball was sent into the box from the left side, and on the rebound Michael Forston passed across to Kristian Reiersgord, ho notched his fourth goal of the season with a wide-open shot from six yards out.

Shortly before halftime Will Schifeling (So./Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) was taken down in the box, but Cobber goalkeeper Peter Runquist came up with a game-changing stop Branden McGarrity’s (Fy./Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) penalty kick. The first-year forward would not be denied however, as he eventually tallied the game winner in the 64th minute.

The scoring chance began when Ginet chased down a long ball and found McGarrity alone inside the box. The rookie spun and fired inside the near post, tallying his ninth goal of the campaign which ties him for the ninth-best single-season figure in program history.

Carleton will be right back on the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 23 as the Knights hosts Nebraska Wesleyan at 1 p.m. Live video of that match can be seen on Knights Online.
