ST. JOSEPH, Minn. -- With a 1-0 loss to Saint John’s University on Saturday, the Carleton College men’s soccer team ended up with the No. 6 seed in next week’s MIAC Playoffs.

The 86th minute heartbreaker off the foot of Paul Wadsworth snapped a 576-minute scoreless streak for the Carleton (10-7-1, 4-5-1 MIAC) defense, marking the first time the Knights have conceded a goal in three weeks.

Carleton started the game off hot, firing four shots in the opening minutes of the game. The Knights finished the stanza with seven shots to the hosts’ five attempts.

The Johnnies (7-7-2. 4-4-2 MIAC) ramped up the pressure coming out of halftime, and Carleton goalkeeper Brandon Hilliard (Sr./Anoka, Minn./Totino Grace) and the red-hot Knights’ backline had their hands full fending off the Saint John’s attack. The teams finished the day with 11 shots apiece, while Carleton held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

Andy Younkins (So./Beaverton, Ore./Westview) and Trevor Freeland (Jr./DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) led the Knights on offense, tallying three shots each.

The 86th-minute goal from Wadsworth helped the Johnnies leapfrog Carleton and clinch the No. 5 seed for the MIAC playoffs and a trip to No. 4 seed Hamline University.

The Knights will travel to St. Paul, Minn. to take on No. 3 seed Macalester College on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at 2p.m. Links to a live video webcast and live stats will be available via Knights Online.
