GRINNELL, Iowa – Spencer Weeden (Jr./Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) flicked home a delivery by Mark Roth (Sr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) as the Carleton College men’s soccer team won its second consecutive 1-0 match, this time besting host Grinnell College.
The Knights (2-0-0) owned a 21-6 edge in shot attempts and were able to make Weeden’s eighth-minute tally stand up in a match played under hot and humid conditions. Carleton has won its last three meetings with the Pioneers by identical 1-0 results.
The Knights nearly added to their goal total on two occasions late in the first half, but Grinnell goalkeeper Jared Cloutier made leaping deflections of an Alvin Bierley (So./Santa Cruz, Calif./Leland) strike and a Henry Koelling (Fy./Ann Arbor, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) header in the final 90 seconds of the period.
David Rubin (So./Ann Arbor, Mich./Greenhills) had one of the Knights’ best scoring chances in the second half, testing Cloutier from long range in the 65th minute. That blast sailed just outside the right post.
Aaron Forman (So./Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) stopped three shots in registering his second shutout of the weekend. The Knight defense yielded only two shot attempts over the final 51 minutes of the contest.
Carleton travels to Concordia-Chicago for a 3 p.m. non-conference match on Monday, Sept. 3.
