After a Strike Each, Wartburg and Carleton Draw, 1-1

By Andrew Harvey '15

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – In a matchup of similar styles, the two teams tied for No. 6 in the region came up even on the field against one another as the Carleton College men’s soccer team drew a 1-1 result when they faced off against Wartburg College.

In the first half, Carleton (2-0-2) held a slim 8-7 advantage in shots against Wartburg (3-0-2). Despite good chances from each side, neither team was able to connect.

That changed early in the second half, when in the 46th minute, Will Corcoran (Sr./Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi) dribbled the ball around the outside of the Wartburg defensive line and rocketed a shot off the body of Wartburg keeper Zak Kohlmeyer. Peter Passalino (Fy./Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) was in place for the rebound and blasted it into the net to lift the Knights to a 1-0 lead.

The advantage would be short-lived, however, when less than a minute later Wartburg’s Zubeen Azari chased down a long ball, split the Carleton defensive wall and rolled the ball it past the keeper to tie up the match.

After playing the full 90 minutes of regulations, both squads fought through two tough overtime periods, where Carleton held a 6-3 shot advantage overall but was unable to break the deadlock.

The Knights next play at home against Aurora University on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 12 p.m. Live stats and video will be available via Knights Online.
