ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Defender Neil Bartholomay (Sr./St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) tallied the first of three second-half goals for the Knights as the Carleton College men’s soccer team picked up a conference road win at Bethel University, 4-1.
First-year Kevin Doyle (Evanston, Ill/Evanston Township) scored the first goal of the match—and his collegiate career—when he headed home a cornerkick from Will Corcoran (Sr./Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi) in the ninth minute to give Carleton (6-1-2, 2-1 MIAC) the early advantage.
Bethel (4-4, 1-2 MIAC) responded in the 22nd minute when Danny Jaderholm’s defelcted shot bounced off the goal post and evened up the scoreboard.
The second half, however, would be a different story, with the Knights building a 9-4 margin in shot attempts.
Corcoran nearly gave the visitors the lead in the 51st minute with his rocket off the crossbar, but Carleton cashed in an opportunity in the 65th minute. Peter Passalino (Fy./Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) collected a clearance and served the ball back into the box, where Devin Tomson-Moylan (Jr./St. Paul, Minn./Central) flicked the ball over to Bartholomay, who kicked it home for his third goal of the week. That tally proved to be the game winner.
Branden McGarrity (So./Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) figured in two goals during the last two minutes to put the game out of reach. In the 84th minute, McGarrity beat his defender to the endline, drew the Bethel goalkeeper out and served ball across to Will Schifeling (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis). The junior forward calmly slotted it home with right foot.
McGarrity would notch his fourth goal in as many games when he carried the ball through the Bethel defense to create a breakaway opportunity. One-on-one with keeper, he dribbled to the outside and tapped it in for his 23rd career goal, tying Ken Tape ’99 for seventh in school history.
Battling slippery conditions, Keenan Smith (Jr./Madison, Wis./West) recorded six saves for the Knights, who next host the University of Northwestern on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 4:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available via Knights Online.
