Knights Topple Royals for First MIAC Win

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- Goals by Sam Hayward (Sr./Stanford, Calif./Gunn) and Alex Griese (Jr./Melbourne, Fla./Hun School of Princeton) lifted the Carleton College men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Bethel University. This was the Knights’ first conference win of the season.

Carleton (4-4-2, 1-1-1 MIAC) out-shot the hosts by a 20-8 margin with half of those attempts being on frame. Over the last four matches, the Knights have taken 88 shots compared to only 37 attempts by the opposition.

The Knights took the early lead in the 12th minute as Hawyard notched not only his first goal of the season, but it was also the first goal of the senior co-captain’s collegiate career.

Bethel evened the score in the 68th minute on a goal by Danny Jaderholm, but Carleton answered back in the 79th minute. A well-struck free kick by Branden McGarrity (Sr./Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) forced Royals’ goalkeeper Jakob Bartels to deflect the ball, but Griese slotted home the rebound for the game-winning tally.

Bartels did his best to keep his squad in the game, registering seven saves in the second half alone. Brandon Hilliard (So./Anoka, Minn./Totino Grace) was credited with three saves for the Knights.

Carleton returns home to host Gustavus Adolphus College for a doubleheader on Saturday, Oct. 3. The men’s game begins at 1 p.m., while the women’s game is slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.
