WINONA, Minn. – The Carleton College men’s swimming & diving team recorded the fastest time in each of its races during a dual meet at Saint Mary’s University. The Knights cruised to a 161-62 victory. Senior diver Leo Hummel (Seattle, Wash./Garfield) picked up the “Can of Corn” Award as Carleton’s athlete of the meet. Hummel posted personal-best scores as he finished a close second on both the 1- and 3-meter boards.
Sophomores Jesse Gourevitch (Ardsley, N.Y.) and Christian Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) tied for the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.48. Gourevitch added a first-place showing in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall at 2:22.65.
A trio of rookies won individual events on this day. Will Sparks (Fy./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) grabbed the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle, Eli Danson (Fy./Wausau, Wis./Wausau East) recorded the day’s fastest time in the 500-yard freestyle, and Evan Harris (Fy./Lexington, S.C.) turned in the quickest 400-yard individual medley performance.
Jaymes Awbrey (Jr./Farmington, Minn./Farmington) won the mixed 1,650-yard freestyle in 18:31.73, and Djem Kissiov (Sr./Madison, Wis./West) finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.19
Mamoru Kanazawa (Jr./Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International School) won both the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard backstroke, while Erik Klontz (Jr./Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) recorded the fastest time in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle sprints and the 100-yard butterfly.
The Knights will host their final home dual meet of the season next Saturday, Jan. 28 as Carleton hosts St. Olaf College. It will be senior day at Thorpe Pool for both programs. Competition is slated for 2 p.m., and Knights Online will carry a live video stream.
