By J.M. Hanley '16

MINNEAPOLIS – The relays were among the top finishers for the Carleton College swimming team on day two at the University of Minnesota’s Jean Freeman Invitational. The Knights once again raced against Division I schools, Minnesota and South Dakota State University as well as many of the squads from around the MIAC.

In the 400 freestyle relay, the “A” Team of Stephen Grinich (So./Mcminnville, Ore./Mcminnville), Wilson Josephson (So./Mount Hermon, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon), Benito Ramirez (Sr./Saint Louis Park, Minn./Minneapolis South), and Evan Lahr (Fy./Monticello, Minn./Monticello) placed fourth in a field of 30 with a time of 3:11.50.  Teammates Will Sparks (Jr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), George McAneny (So./Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz), Alex Mathson (Fy./Verona, Wis./Verona), and Evan Harris (Jr./Lexington, S.C./Lexington) were hot on their heels, finishing ninth in 3:17.38.

In the 200 medley relay, Harris, Lahr, and Ramirez, joined by teammate Aaron Schwab (Fy./Elk River, Minn./Elk River), finished 11th with a time of 1:38.11.  They were followed less than two seconds later by the team of Josephson, McAneny, Ross Brown (Sr./Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls), and Jesse Gourevitch (Sr./Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley)

Lahr also performed well in individual events.  He touched the wall at 47.74 to place 12th in the crowded 100-yard freestyle, which, with 105 swimmers, was the night’s biggest event.

Also of note was Mathson’s finish in the 400-yard individual medley. He swam the sixteen laps in 4:18:06, placing 11th of 39 competitors.

Coach Andy Clark’s squad will head to the Florida Keys next week for the team’s annual winter break completion trip. Between training sessions, the Knights at Kalamazoo College will face off in the water.
