MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Carleton College men’s swimming and diving team wrapped the MIAC Championships in the same spot that it concluded the first two days, in fifth place.
The finals began with the 1,650-yard freestyle, where the Knights had four of the top 11 finishers. Alex Mathson (Sr./Verona, Wis./Verona) finished sixth overall at 16:40.48, while the trio of Ben Greenvall (So./Branford, Conn./Branford), Jack Dalluge (Fy./Waverly, Minn./Watertown-Mayer), and Alex Battiste (So./Northfield, Minn./Northfield) each set personal records while placing ninth, 10th, and 11th, respectively, with times of 16:55.31, 17:01.09, and 17:11.93.
Aaron Schwab (Sr./Elk River, Minn./Elk River) placed seventh in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:57.49. Ari Conati (Fy./Minneapolis, Minn./Minnetonka) won the consolation final with his PR time of 1:58.78, and Aaron Reynolds (Sr./Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge) also scored in the event finishing 16th at 2:06.34.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Nick Reeves (Fy./Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) improved his personal best by more than one second when he clocked 48.89 during the prelims to earn the last spot in the evening swims. In the consolation final he moved up one spot and finished 15th overall.
Colin Lau (Jr./Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) trimmed more than 1.6 seconds of his previous personal record to earn a spot in the championship final of the 200-yard breaststroke with a prelims time of 2:13.61. He carried that momentum over to the evening race, reaching the wall in 2:10.89 to finish eighth. Grant Terrien (Sr./Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) made the consolation final after setting a personal-best mark of 2:15.49 in the prelims. Like so many other Knights, he bettered that time when swimming in the finals, placing 11th overall at 2:14.98.
Sam Darwish (Fy./Akron, Ohio./University School) set a new PR of 1:59.54 during the prelims of the 200-yard butterfly, as did Battiste, who took 3.6 seconds off his previous best, reaching the wall at 2:04.63. Both earned a spot in the consolation final where they finished 11th and 15th, respectively.
The weekend concluded with the 400-yard freestyle relay, where Conati, Reeves, Ryan Wetzel (Fy./Salem, Ore./West Salem), and Lau put together a time of 3:13.94.
