COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Carleton College men’s swimming and diving team reached the wall first in seven events and defeated Saint John’s University by a score of 146-133. Will Altaweel (So./Madison, Wisc. Madison West) swam season-best times in the 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard butterfly, and 200-yard IM events to score critical points for the Knights in this tight dual meet. His performances earned him the team’s “Can of Corn” award.

“This by far was our best meet of the season in terms of the focus and intensity that both teams had,” said Carleton head coach Andy Clark. “We knew it would be a battle for both squads to pull out wins, and it was exciting to see them rise up and compete with a huge team mentality.

“We just had our hardest week of training since coming back (from Winter Break), and I know we had lots of tired bodies but this meet was exactly the type of challenge we needed. Lots of great racing. Meets like this aren't always about setting PR's but more about getting your hand on the wall first. But we had plenty of both, and I credit both squads for bringing in big energy and making every swim and dive count.”

Andrew Chang (So./Vancouver, Wash./Union) swam well, capturing first in the 200-yard IM with a score of 2:01.20, first in the 200-yard butterfly at 2:02.56, and first in the 200-yard medley relay. In that latter event, he combined with Eli Offman (Fy./Toronto, Ont./Canada Greenwood College), Ryan Wetzel (Jr./Salem, Ore./West Salem), and Jack Dalluge (Jr./Waverly, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) on a time of 1:39.96.

Jack Heinzel (So./Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) first in the 100-yard freestyle clocking in at 49.75. Wetzel was also first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:18.98. Sam Darwish (Jr./Akron, Ohio/University School) contributed an individual event triumph, finishing first in the 1650-yard freestyle with a 17:57.70 time.

Offman with a time of 54.65 and Altaweel with a time of 56.34 claimed first and second places, respectively, in the 100-yard butterfly. Altaweel recorded a 2:06.55 and claimed second place in the 200-yard IM.

Carleton’s next competition will come on Saturday, January 26 as the Knights head across town to face St. Olaf College.
