NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Carleton College men’s swimming and diving team held its first dual meet of the season on Friday evening at Thorpe Pool. The Knights faced and tough challenge in defending MIAC champion and No. 23-ranked University of St. Thomas. Ryan Wetzel’s (So./Salem, Ore./West Salem) victory in the 200-yard breaststroke was the top highlight performance for the Knights.

In the 200 breaststroke, Wetzel out-touched Bryce Hoppe of St. Thomas by 0.12 seconds as Wetzel reached the wall in a career-best 2:20.25. Wetzel also leadoff the Knights’ entry in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 23.09 as well as being Carleton’s top performer in the 100-yard breastroke (1:03.00) and swimming on the team’s top entry in the 200-yard medley relay.

Andrew Chang (Fy./Vancouver, Wash./Union) was second in both the 100-yard butterfly (52.46) and 200-yard IM (2:02.66). He joined Wetzel, Nick Reeves (So./Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington), and Stevie Fitch (Fy./Redmond, Wash./Nikola Tesla Stem School) on Carleton’s 200-yard medley that opened the meet with a season-best time of 1:39.73.

Jack Dalluge (So./Waverly, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) added a second-place result in 200-yard freestyle (1:47.38). He, Wetzel, Reeves, and Fitch combined on a season-best time of 1:30.06 for the 200 free relay.

Overall, the depth of St. Thomas’ roster was too much for the Knights, however, as the Tommies posted a 226-64 victory.

Carleton will be back in action next Friday, Nov. 10 for a 6 p.m. meet against Hamline University.
